During the American War of Independence, General George Washington
ordered that these words be read to the troops at Valley Forge, on
Christmas Eve, shortly before the crossing of the Delaware. For over
two hundred years, we have turned to those citizens who, in times of
grave crisis, stand by our country. Each of us has been endowed by our
Creator with the unalienable rights of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of
Happiness. Those rights have been and will be secured by the men and
women of our armed forces.
